The Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) has recorded 132 deaths and 655 injured victims in various road accidents across the state in 2024.
This was disclosed in a statement made available to newsmen by TRACE Spokesperson, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, in Abeokuta on Friday.
According to Akinbiyi, 91 men, 29 women, seven male children and five female children died in the accidents.
He added that 408 men, 209 women, 31 male children and seven female children sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said that 43 pedestrians, 114 buses, 89 motorcycles, 223 trucks, 87 tankers and 179 tankers were involved in the accidents.

Agencies for total collection (Nigeria Police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC),” he said.
Akinbiyi added that 2024 total fatal accidents accounted for 16 per cent while serious accident shared the larger percentage of 79 per cent, and five per cent was for minor accident.
” Commercial vehicles remained the most involved in road traffic crash with 73 per cent while private vehicles shared the smaller chunk of 27 per cent,” he said.
The TRACE spokesperson explained that the major causes of road traffic crashes remained speeding with 45 per cent, mechanical fault 19 per cent, reckless driving 14 per cent.
” Also, driving in a direction prohibited by the road traffic law 11 per cent, tyre burst four per cent, road rage three per cent, poor
weather one per cent, fatigue one per cent, brake failure one per cent and failed portion of the road one per cent,” he said.
Akinbiyi explained that there was a significant reduction in
death, injuries and cases of road traffic crashes across the state compared to 2023.
He said that road traffic death decreased by 31.25 per cent in 2024 while number of persons injured also reduced by 29.49 per cent and the total number of crashes by 41.11 per cent.
He explained that one of the ways to reduce crashes was to increase the workforce of TRACE to enhance effective productivity.
Akinbiyi also listed provision of patrol vehicles along the major 18 corridors and metropolis for constant monitoring patrol to reduce carnage.
” Provision of adequate mandatory warning signs and prohibition signs along the 18 major traffic corridors in the state is also important,” he said.
