The Super Eagles of Nigeria have, in a show of class, recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory against Mozambique to advance to the quarterfinals of the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Having scaled through the group stage with an 100 percent win record, the Super Eagles were paired with one of the group stage’s best third place finisher, Mozambique, for the knockout stage.
Both teams would face-off at the Fez Stadium in Morocco on Monday.
As much anticipated, the Super Eagles assumed their dominance of the game right from the blow of the whistle.
They broke the deadlock in the 20th minute of play courtesy Ademola Lookman’s goal.
The former CAF African player of the year who put Nigeria into the early lead would turn an assistant five minutes after as Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen, tapped in his sublime pass to double the lead before halftime whistle.
Super Eagles returned to second half with same momentum and dominance as Mozambique struggled to find their bearing against the three times African champions.
With barely two minutes into the second half, Osimhen bagged a brace courtesy another Lookman’s brilliance.
This however appeared not to be the icing of the cake for the Eric Chelle-led side as Sevilla forward increased the Super Eagles’ tally to four with a powerful strike in the 75th minutes.
Despite the wide gap lead, Super Eagles still mounted pressure in Mozambique who failed to make any shot on target.
Defender, Bright Osayi, came close to adding a fifth, but his long range shot far too wide.
The game ended in 4-0 in favour of the Super Eagles who will face the winner of the match between DR Congo and Algeria.
