No fewer than 2,776 deaths have been recorded across 5,700 crashes in 2024, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) revealed.
The statistics was disclosed during an interview by FRSC Corp Marshall, Sheu Muhammed, on Friday.
According to Sheu, the figures were recorded between January to June 2024.
The FRSC boss further disclosed that over 16,000 fatalities with serious degrees of injury were also recorded.
“The statistics that we have from January, this year, to June, we recorded about 5700 crashes with 2776 deaths and over 16,000 fatalities with serious injuries.” Sheu said.
However, the latest statistics saw a reduction as compared to last year’s record within same period.
“But if you look at the comparism with previous year, 2023 January to June, we have a slight decrease with 2.4% in terms of crashes and 2.3% in terms of the death.” The FRSC boss added.
Meanwhile, Sheu, as earlier reported, explained the need for the approval of FRSC arms bill.
He explained that the Corps’ request is to be availed an armed squad like other paramilitary outlets in the country.
Their sole responsibility, according to him, will be to protect the Corp’s infrastructural facilities as against concern of using them for reinforcement and patrol.
