Nigeria’s National Bureau of Statistics has said that at least, 133million Nigerians experience almost all indices of poverty. In in its latest Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for 2022, the NBS said the figure represents 63% of the entire population.
“The National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2022 shows that poor people in Nigeria experience over one quarter of all possible deprivations.
“A significant portion of this poor population are deprived of cooking fuel, adequate sanitation and access to healthcare,” the NBS stated
The figures show an average deprivation score among poor people, which indicates the intensity of poverty, is 40.9%
The report was quoted thus: “Over a fifth of poor people experience deprivations in at least half of the dimensions or weighted indicators.
“The poorest districts also have the highest intensity of poverty—each poor person is deprived in 51% of the weighted MPI indicators in Kebbi South and Bayelsa West.”
