The Academic Staff Union of Universities have raised the alarm that the Federal Government has been trying to set the Nigerian public against its members over the ongoing industrial disputes with the government.
It’s more than three months that varsity students have been at home over demands by university teachers for improved conditions of service and better funding of university education.
In its bulletin released on Monday, ASUU said government officials have of late been acting in deliberate matters to misinform the public.
“The agents of government are redoubling their efforts at misinforming, misleading and twisting facts relating to our struggles to the Nigerian public especially our students and their parents. Don’t believe them. It is aimed at dividing us and sowing seeds of hatred against our patriotic struggles,” said the bulletin signed by ASUU President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke.
Vowing that there shall be no lectures without the approval of theUTAS payment system, ASUU accused the Nigerian Technological Development Agency (NITDA) of sabotage adding that the agency has been going out to rubbish what the university teachers consider to be the most acceptable mode of payment of their salaries.
The ASUU president confirmed that the Nigeria Labour Congress has spearheaded another round of meetings with government and promised to ensure that the union is not shortchanged.
The bulletin added that last week, ASUU leadership met with the government renegotiation team disclosing however that nothing concrete came out of the meeting.
It added that the representatives of government were “addressing platitudes rather than the core of the issues.”
