The Federal Government has taken over Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), adopting it as Federal University.
The Ogun state-owned institution located at the Ijagun area of the state was handed over to the Federal Ministry of Education by the state governor, Dapo Abiodun.
Announcing the takeover of the university in a post on his X handle on Monday, the Minister of Education, Dr, Tunji Alausa, disclosed that the institution becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District.
Alausa held that the adoption of Tai Solarin is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin- renowned education revolutionaries-as well as the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012.
He stated that the adoption of the institution aligned with the Ministry’s Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
This, according to the Minister, brough the totalnumber of new Universities of Education added by the Federal Government in the past few years to seven.
Alausa expressed his gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for signing off the adoption and Dapo Abiodun for allowing the takeover of the institution.
He assured that with three universities now dedicated to education, the Federal Government can further enhance the pathways to producing the qualified intellectual teachers and educators that Nigerians desperately need.
The statement read in part; “The Federal Ministry of Education is pleased to announce the adoption of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University.
“Tai Solarin University, established by the Ogun State Government in 2005, is the first specialized university of education in Nigeria.
“As a federal institution, TASUED will become the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East Senatorial District.
“The adoption of Tai Solarin is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honor Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin — renowned education revolutionaries — as well as the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012.
“As part of President Bola Tinubu GCFR’s intense commitment to advancing Nigeria’s human capital development and improving the quality of education, which depends on several factors, including deepening high-quality teacher training, the adoption of TASUED as a Federal University couldn’t have come at a better time.
“Additionally, the adoption of TASUED aligns seamlessly with FME’s Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), particularly our objective to strengthen teacher education and improve the quality of instruction at all levels.
“This brings the total number of new Universities of Education added by the Federal Government in the past few years to SEVEN, in addition to the previously existing ones.
“These universities are listed as follows: 1. Federal University of Education, Kano, Kano State 2. Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State 3. “I extend my deepest gratitude to Mr President for signing off on the adoption and thank His Excellency, Mr. Dapo Abiodun, Governor of Ogun State, for allowing the Federal Government to take over Tai Solarin.
