- Safiu Kehinde
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has talked down claims on former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, being an influential figure in the ongoing coalition party formation spearheaded by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar.
NPO earlier Reported Wike’s backlash of backlash of Amaechi over his criticism of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration.
Amaechi had at a symposium held to mark his 60th birthday over the weekend disclosed why he refused to support Tinubu’s presidency as he called for his removal by 2027, stressing that Nigerians are hungry- including him.
Reacting to the remark during his monthly media parley in Abuja on Monday, Wike slammed the former Minister of Transportation.
The FCT Minister claimed the Amaechi is only hungry for power which according to Wike indicated sign of his failure across his over two decades in the helm of power.
Speaking further, Wike talked down the insinuation of Amaechi’s political influence.
He held that the ex-Rivers governor is overrated, recounting his failure to produce a successor.
Wike also claimed Amaechi failed to secure 25% vote in the state for former President, Muhammadu Buhari, under who her served as Minister for eight years.
“We overrate people. He was governor in till 2015. He couldn’t produce as successor. He couldn’t give his candidate, Muhammadu Buahri common 25%.
“He was a sitting Minister in 2019. No President has ever moved with soldiers the way he came with soldiers.
“He says he will produce a governor; he couldn’t produce a candidate.” Wike said.
The FCT Minister further recounted Amaechi’s support of Atiku during the 2023 General Election.
He alleged that the former Minister would have taken all glory for himself if Atiku had won.
“Again, in 2023 he came that he is going to support Atiku. Thank God we did not support PDP. If we had supported PDP and they won, he would have taken the glory. We said okay we will not support PDP and they failed. They failed. They didn’t even get 10 percent. So, what is influential.” He said.
Wike further faulted Amaechi’s boast that the President can be removed from power, labelling his choice of word as dictatorial term used in military coup.
“How could somebody come out on national television and tell Nigerians if we want to remove the President now we can. Is it a military coup?
“The word removal leads to dictatorship by the military.
“You only use that word remove when there is a coup. I thought at all he would have said we will vote him out.” He added.
