At least, 27 suspects have been arrested by the Enugu State Police Command over violent clash in the state.
The clash which was reported to have broken out at Umuchigbo-Nike, Enugu East Local Government Area occurred after two brothers were killed.
In retaliation, the members of the murdered brothers’ community stormed the other community, destroying several houses, vehicles, with other properties were set ablaze.
In reaction, the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, visited the scenes of the recent violent clashes to observe that rate of damages done.
The Commissioner, as contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, expressed deep concern over the scale of the avoidable and senseless violence
He reportedly directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough and discreet investigation into the incident.
Mamman also ordered a sustained manhunt for the fleeing suspects, assuring that all those found culpable will be brought to justice.
He further urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and members of the warring factions to remain calm, embrace dialogue, sheathe their swords, and support the Police in ensuring that justice prevails and peace is fully restored to the community.
Meanwhile, preliminary investigation revealed that the attacks and destruction stemmed from a leadership tussle that has long divided the community.
It further showed that the murder of the two brothers on 29th October 2025 by one faction, and a retaliatory attack by the opposing faction the following day, led to the destruction and burning of five residential buildings and several vehicles.
Normalcy has, however, been restored in the area, with police operatives deployed to maintain law and order.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to maintaining public peace and security, warning that acts of violence under any guise will not be tolerated in Enugu State.
