The Senate has declared kidnapping an act of terrorism while calling for amendments to the Terrorism (Prevention) Act to impose the death penalty on culprits.
This is coming amid growing concern over the spate of insecurity across the country which is now largely earmarked with unprovoked attacks and abduction of armless citizens.
In the wake of the series of abduction recorded over the past weeks, the lawmakers came to the resolution during the Senate’s plenary session on Wednesday.
According to reports, the lawmakers unanimously agreed that anyone convicted of kidnapping should face the death penalty once the legislation is updated.
The resolution mandated that, upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.
This, according to the lawmakers, is intended to serve as a powerful deterrent and demonstrate the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity.
