Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, has vowed that the alleged rigging and manipulation witnessed at the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Election will not be permitted to repeat itself during the 2027 General Election.
Yesufu made the vow during her address at a Press Conference held by the Obidient Movement on Monday.
The #BringBackOurGirls convener faulted the results of the election which saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerge winner of five council chairmanship elections while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched the last area council.
Meanwhile, the focal point of discourse for the Obidient Movement was on the defeat of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) Chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Dr. Moses Paul.
NPO Reported that APC candidate for the council, Christopher Maikalangu, had emerged winner of the poll with 40,295 votes as against Paul’s 12,109 votes.
The results had since been heavily by the ADC with Yesufu also joining the dissenting voices.
While maintaining that Nigerians will resist the votes manipulation in 2027 general election, the activist affirmed that the Obidient Movement remained a formidable force.
“There will not be a repeat of what you saw happen on Saturday. And for those who would want to believe that there is anything within the Obidient Movement that has gone down, it hasn’t.
“In a way, it has even exploded more exponentially, and the growth is out there.” She said.
Further reflecting on the FCT poll, Yesufu held that the increased number of voters witnessed during the election was as a result of Paul’s campaign and the support of the 2023 Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
“We also have to understand that for the first time, we saw an increase compared to what you usually have in terms of people’s awareness of the Area Council Election.
“We have a country where most people do not think about or focus on Area Council Elections.
“They were more interested in states or general election. But for the first time in Abuja, we saw what the campaign that Dr. Mo did and his Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi himself brought into the campaign and the way they were able to get the people to be very focused on the campaign.” She said.
However, Yesufu expressed concern over electoral violence witnessed during the poll.
The activist said election in Nigeria has become war as she claimed that an electorate was killed during the election.
“And one of the things that should worry everyone in Nigeria is that election has become a war.
“There must not be in any ground on which a human being, a Nigerian just like us, will loss his life.” She said.
