Despite advocacy and general stance against vote buying in Nigeria, an Abuja-based woman has publicly admitted selling her vote at the just concluded 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Election while giving reason for decision.
The woman, as captured in a now viral video shared on X on Monday, recounted how she had arrived at her polling unit with the expectation of being offered a token in exchange for our vote.
She said she would rather sell the vote; use the money to buy soft drink and break her fast than standing under the sun to vote for politicians who care less about her.
“I’m not seeing any improvement. They are not sharing anything and I’m fasting.
“I will not just come under the sun and them they are inside AC. And I will come and vote just like that and they will say they will work.
“Which work are they doing?” She asked.
When asked about her preference of selling over voting her conscience, the lady further defended her decision to sell her vote as she expressed indifference over whoever wins the poll.
“It is better. I can drink maybe Coke or Maltina in the evening when I break my fast instead of me standing in the sun, they will not give me anything and I will still go back with nothing.
“Even if they win, do they know me? They don’t know me. So, it’s better I sell my vote.” She said.
In contrast, other voters interviewed decried the spate of vote buying at the yet-to-be ascertained polling unit.
