As Abaribe Joins Labour Party
- Safiu Kehinde
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has again trolled the African Democratic Congress (ADC), declaring the party dead over mass defection of lawmakers from the party.
This is coming under the heels of the Supreme Court ruling and exit of key political figures like the 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
NPO Reported that the Supreme Court had last week ordered the return of the ADC leadership crisis case between the David Mark-led faction and the Nafiu Bala-led faction to the trial court.
The apex court however nullified the status quo antebellum ruling of the Appeal Court.
This enabled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to revert its decision and recognise the leadership of David Mark.
Despite the recognition, Obi and Kwankwaso would on Sunday jilted the ADC as they defected to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), citing the unresolved litigation case of the ADC as reason for their defection.
The development had triggered mass defection at the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Also joining the defectors was Abia state lawmaker, Sen. Enyinnaya Abaribe, who dumped the ADC for Labour Party.
While reading Abaribe’s resignation letter during the red chamber’s plenary session on Tuesday, Akpabio called for the listing of all defecting lawmakers and mass announcement of their defection instead of the individual submission of letters.
He thereafter declared the ADC dead while expressing readiness to keep reading the resignation letters of the defecting lawmakers.
“Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper so that we don’t keep announcing and announcing.
“I think ADC is dead. I’m ready to keep announcing but let us compile all so that it doesn’t look like a daily ritual. If you are moving from Labour, we will write all of you.
“If you are moving from the ADC, we will write all of you. If you are entering NDC, We will write all of you.” Akpabio said.
