Suggests Sanctions Against MTN, DSTV
- Safiu Kehinde
The Senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomole, has called for the Federal Government’s retaliation of South Africans xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in their country.
Oshiomole charged the government to take firm economic action against South African companies over the treatment of Nigerians abroad.
He suggested the sanction of MTN and DSTV as he accused them of exploiting Nigeria.
The former Edo state governor stated this during the Senate’s plenary session on Tuesday.
Addressing the red chamber when the issue of the xenophobic attack was raised, Oshiomhole demanded the revocation of all South African operations of companies
“Our government should revoke the DSTV, which is also a South African Company, carrying away millions of dollars, even abusing, resorting to practices that would not even be accepted in South Africa,” he said.
While being countered with claims of speaking out of emotion, Oshiomole dismissed emotional responses, insisting the issue demands decisive action.
“We didn’t come here to shed tears. If you hit me, I hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy,” he declared.
Oshiomhole further argued that if Nigerians are being accused of taking jobs in South Africa, then Nigerians should reclaim opportunities at home from foreign companies like MTN and DStv.
“What the Black South Africans are saying is that Nigerians are taking their jobs. Okay, Nigerians, come home and take over the job of MTN, take over the job of DSTV,” he said.
The lawmaker maintained that stronger retaliation would force South Africa’s leadership to act.
“When we hit back, the President of South Africa will recognize that Nigerians cannot be treated this way,” he added.
