The Lagos State Government is set to commence the crushing of motorcycles impounded from commercial operators popularly called Okada.
Over 1000 of the impounded machines have been assembled at the Task Force office in Lagos with the crushing machines ready to mow them down.
NPO Reports that the Task force operatives had commenced the confiscation of the motorcycles after the announcement of a ban in five local government areas of the state.
The action of the state government followed incessant attacks by the operators on citizens.
The most recent was the killing and burning of a sound engineer Sunday Imoh at the Admiralty Way, Lekki after an argument over N100 transport fare.
The government had said both riders and passengers would now be prosecuted when arrested.
The crushing of the motorcycles is expected to be a continuous exercise as part of what the government said would discourage those who invest in the business.
Addressing journalists at the scene of the crushing in Ikeja, Chairman of the Task Force, Sola Jejeloye, said “Everybody knows there is no going back. It is the law.”
Asked about uniformed who use the covers of their uniforms to operate commercially, Jejeloye said on no account would any military or para-military official be allowed to use his bike without being in his full uniform.
“No police officer, Naval officer, if you have to use your bike, you must be in uniform. No uniform officer is allowed to use his bike without his uniform.”
The task force chairman said the influx of the riders had been a source of concern saying “if you travel on the express, you will see them coming into Lagos in droves.”
