The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has frozen the account of the Osun State Government.
This is coming less than 10 days to the state’s governorship election slated to hold on the 15th of August 2026.
The anti-graft agency froze the account domicilied with First Bank on Wednesday with a letter addressed to the bank’s Managing Director confirming the development.
As seen in the copy of the letter, the EFCC placed a “Post No Debit (PND)” status, preventing withdrawals and other debit transactions from the account.
The correspondence, referenced 3000/EFCC/ABJ/HQ/PFS/TA/OSUN/VOL.17/666, identified the affected account as “Osun State Government Statutory Allocation,” bearing account number 2017170947.
The EFCC noted that the directive follows an earlier communication dated April 15, 2026, also linked to the ongoing probe.
The letter stated: “Refer to our letter CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/HQ/PFS/TA/OSUN/VOL.17/165 dated 15th April, 2026, on the above subject. In furtherance to the above, you are kindly requested to place a Post-No-Debit on the account.”
While confirming that the restriction is tied to an investigation, the Commission did not disclose specific details of the allegations or name any individuals involved.
The EFCC explained that the action is backed by legal provisions, citing Section 38 (1) and (2) of the EFCC (Establishment) Act, 2004 and Section 24 of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Meanwhile, the development is also coming few hours after the state’ governor, Ademola Adeleke, raised alarm over the plot to freeze all the accounts linked to the state government.
NPO Reported that the governor had in a statement issued by spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, described the plan as height of lawlessness, stressing that the EFCC has no legal power to freeze the account of the state.
‘The governor who said such a plan, if true, amounts to the height of lawlessness, said the plot to freeze the state government accounts is meant to paralyze government activities ahead of the August 15th governorship election.
‘The governor affirmed that there is no legal basis or justification for any push to freeze the state government accounts, declaring that the anti-graft agency has no legal powers to freeze the account of a state government.’ The statement partly read.
