The Federal Government has revealed plan to remove electricity as part of ongoing effort to clear off the power sector’s debt.
Joseph Tegbe, the Minister of Power, disclosed that the electricity subsidy will be removed in 2027.
The Minister made the disclosure during his address at the commissioning of a 3-megawatt solar hybrid power project at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly the University of Abuja, on Wednesday.
Tegbe held that he has the mandate of President Bola Tinubu to clear off all outstanding debt and set up a sustainable structure with the susbsidy removal part of the planned structural reform of the power sector.
“It is a fact that we have continued to build up debts. People are asking questions of all these N3.3trn when will it stop?
“We have the mandate of Mr. President to clear off the debt and come with a sustainable structure to make sure this doesn’t pile up anymore.
“I promise you that next year, by God’s grace, we will put a stop to this so called subsidy in our sector.” He said.
Tegbe however assured Nigerians of continued constant power supply after the subsidy removal.
“Mr. President will not deprive Nigerians of anything. We will make sure that the Nigerian consumers continue to have light.
“This is an amazing good news and like I told you, we now have lights 16 hours.” He said.
