The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has on Wednesday reacted to the recurring collapse of the national grid over the past months.
According to earlier reports by NPO Reports, Ikeja Electric, one of the service providers in the country announced the collapse of the national grid which happened at about 10:50am on Monday, making it the seventh time in 2022, therefore, plunging the country into darkness.
The company, along other distribution companies, announced that blackout was due to the collapse of the national grid.
The development has been recurring one.
Obi, through his verified Twitter handle, @PeterObi, expressed his displeasure over the recurrence of the national grid collapse. He stated that it reminds him of the long recovery journey the nation has ahead and how stable power generation and transmission remains a national security issue.
“The report of yet another national grid collapse is very disturbing to me, and is a reminder of the long rescue and recovery journey ahead of us. Effective power generation, transmission and distribution remain a national security issue.”
In addition, Obi disclosed that successfully improving power generation and transmission is one of the Obi-Datti policy-plan to ensure stable and adequate power transmission to Nigerians in 2023.
“This also places power in the front burner of campaign and policy. Painfully, this latest episode is the 7th national grid collapse in 2022.”
“As part of the Obi-Datti policy plan, we have put together a strategic plan to progressively scale up power generation and the liberalisation of the transmission infrastructure in the country, to ensure that Nigerians enjoy adequate and stable power supply from 2023 onwards.”
“Power is critical to the development and sustainability of all sectors of the national economy.”
He assured in his statement that national grid collapse will be a thing of the past under his watch and will also be a benchmark for past administrations.
“For us, power remains a top priority. Under my watch, national grid collapse will become a matter of history and a reference point for erstwhile administrations.”
