A new crisis is brewing over shocks of half salaries received by universities teachers after calling off their 9 month old salary early October
Indications have emerged on the possibilities of resumption of industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities as anger boiled over the half salaries paid lecturers for October.
NPO Reported late Thursday that ASUU members were shocked to find out that they were paid half of their salaries for the month of October.
President of the union, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, was quoted as saying that the union would summon a meeting of its members to decide on the next line of action.
Union leaders are said to be angry over the fact that the government team did not communicate the decision to them before implementing the decision to pay half salary.
“I expected it. People who expected government to behave differently were being naive,” but a lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University, who preferred not to be named told NPO Reports Friday morning.
A University of Ibadan History lecturer, who also spoke with the NPO Reports lamented that the Federal Government has determined to finally cripple university education.

He said the present crop of younger university teachers would become merciless in their pursuit of personal interests than ever.
“Watch it, this government has just told us that university education does not matter. Younger teachers whom those of us more advanced in age had been encouraging to stick to ethics, would now go all out over bribery, sexual harassments and no one will be able to caution them. They will tell you they too want to ride big cars like they see touts and politicians ride. How do you expect them to teach on empty stomachs?”
However, NPO Reports also gathered that opinions may be divided among ASUU members that the decision to pay half salary by the government might not be enough reason to call for another strike.
Some are of the opinion that government’s decision might be politically wrong but not legally wrong .
“We have been paid for the period we have been at work in October. That is legally right. But it is politically wrong for a government which consider all variables and want peace to reign,” a member of ASUU said.
