More than 10,000 participants are expected to file out for the first-ever Abuja International Marathon when the race gets underway at the City Gate on Saturday, the organisers have said.
The Race Director, Olukayode Thomas, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday that 32 foreign athletes were already on the ground to fight for spoils too.
“These athletes are coming from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Bahrain.
“In addition to these, more than 100 Nigerian elite athletes are also set to give a good account of themselves in the race which begins at 6 a.m.,” he added.
Thomas said the mouth-watering offer of 50,000 dollars for the top finishers in the men’s and women’s categories respectively would ensure the race was keenly contested.
NPO Reports gathered that the Abuja International Marathon will feature three different races, starting with the full marathon (42km), the School Marathon for students (5km) and the family race (10km).
