After about two and a half hours of tension, a former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, has been elected as the President of Nigeria’s 10th senate. The senators had gone into voting after the nomination of Akpabio by Senator Ali Ndume while Senator Elisha Abbo had nominated former Governor of Zamfara, Abdul Aziz Yari for the position.
Announcing the results of the election, the Clerk of the senate said while Yari scored a total of 46 votes, Akpabio polled 63votes to clinch the position.
After the declaration, Akpabio was later ushered by colleagues to the platform where he was sworn in taking oath of office and oath of allegiance.
Present at the Senate on Tuesday while the election held were Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Dapo Abiodun, and others.
After the election of the senate president, former Governor Ebonyi, Engr. Dave Umahi, moved a motion for the nomination of Senator Jibrin Barau for the position of the Deputy Senate President.
After the call for nomination, no other candidate was nominated for the position of the Deputy Senate President, no other candidate was nominated. He was therefore declared elected unopposed by the Clerk of the senate.
