Nigerians have expressed anger over the removal of the Chief Imam of Apo Legislative Quarters, Imam Nuhu Khalid, popularly called “Digital Imam.”
The cleric was suspended on the orders of the mosque’s steering committee, under the chairmanship of Senator Saidu Dansadau after his sermon where he condemned the government’s failure to protect the lives of Nigerians.
The imam had berated the killings and kidnappings in the various parts of the country.
On his removal, the imam simply said “God is the most powerful. He gives (enthrones) and takes away power (dethrones) from whomever He wishes”.
A former senator and governorship aspirant in Kaduna State, Shehu Sanni, said while other clerics now praise leaders no matter how badly they behave, Imam Khalid has chosen the path of telling truth to power.
He said, “When other Islamic Clerics have taken to the path of silence, cowardice or complicity in the face of indifference of Nigeria’s leaders to the plight of the people, Sheikh Nuru Khalid, Shiekh Bello Yabo and few others stood out in using the pulpit to call out & call a spade a spade.
“The suspension of the Imam of Apo Friday Mosque Sheikh Nuru Khalid by the Mosque Steering Committee is unconscionable. His criticisms of the Government reflect the views of most Nigerians. He spoke truth to power at the right time. I urge the committee to reverse the decision.”
