Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has countered claim by a student who said officials of University of Benin said the institution has not received students loans disbursed by the scheme.
In reaction to a post by an X user, who disclosed the University’s claim of not receiving the students loan, NELFUND posted a copy of an acknowledgement letter sent to the scheme by the university’s Vice Chancellor, Lilian Salami.
The X handler had narrated how his brother, who applied for the loan scheme, had went to the school Bursary and Students Affairs office to claim the fund. But he was told the University has not received any institution fees.
“My brother went to confirm at both the students affair and Bursary department of University of Benin and both said they’ve not received any institution fees, that it’s online, so please which department should he make the enquiry from…he already received the monthly” the post had read.
Meanwhile, the acknowledgement letter received by NELFUND from the institution confirmed they received a sum of N24.4 million for 332 students who applied for the loan scheme in the institution.
“I write to acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the sum of Twenty-Four Million, Four Hundred and Twelve Thousand, Five Hundred Naira being the payment of school charges and upkeep for Three Hundred and Thirty Two (332) Students of the University of Benin who have applied for loan under the Nigerian Education Loans Fund (NELFUND) Scheme.
“The University Management appreciates the Fund’s consideration of our students’ applications and assures you of our commitment to the academic success of these students.
“The University commends the laudable effort of the Federal Government to raise the standard of the students and the tertiary education system.
“On behalf of the University Management, please acgept the assurances of the University’s highest regards.” The letter read.

The scheme had, however, explained that the institutions were equally approached by the scheme but they are yet to revert back to them.
