The Nigerian Army has denied the alleged involvement of Brigadier General MS Adamu in illegal detention of naval rating, Seaman Abbas Haruna, for six years.
In the wake of a video clip circulation on social media calling out the Brigadier General over Haruna’s detention, the Defence Headquarters in a statement issued by its Director on Information, Tukur Gusau, debunked the connection of the senior officer to the incident.
The Defence Headquarters called for the conclusion of the case investigation as they vowed to notify the public on its outcome.
“The social media has been again awashed with the pictures of a serving senior officer Brigadier General MS Adamu alleged to be connected to the case of Seaman Abbas Haruna.
“For the records, Brigadier General MS Adamu, whose pictures are being used is in no way connected to the case of Seaman Abbas.
“The Defence Headquarters wishes to seize this opportunity to call on the general public to allow the committtee set up by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa to conclude its findings without prejudice to public opinion.
“Defence Headquarters appeal to the public to restrain from comments that are particularly false and capable of infringing on the fundamental human rightd and privacy of the senior officer.
“The senior officer has the right to seek for legal action against any person or organization that posts his picture(s) in connection with Seaman Abbas case.” The statement read.
Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliyasu, had appeared on Berekete Family programme, disclosing that her husband has been in custody for over six years without trial on the orders of a senior officer whom she identified as Brigadier MS Adamu.
Narrating the Naval ranking’s ordeal at the Human Rights Radio Programme, Iliyasu said Adamu’s plight started in 2018 when he was drafted on a joint operations in Sarti Baruwa Taraba state, where he was to serve under the command of Brigadier MS Adamu, but a misunderstanding ensued between the duo, leading to his detention under inhuman condition for several years without proper trial as enshrined in the Armed Forces Act 2004 Law of the Federation of Nigeria.
In swift response, the Chief of Defense Staff, Christopher Musa, on Monday, called for immediate investiagtion into the allegation.
