Former Minister of Power and Steel, Senator Liyel Imoke has said that the Nigerian power sector has a way of consuming brilliant appointees who had been appointed to man the ministry over the years.
Imoke said brilliant Nigerians who had been known to have performed creditably well in their former positions as governors have been appointed into the ministry but failed to show that competence associated with them.
Imoke spoke in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital on Thursday as the keynote speaker at the ongoing Annual National Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) holding in the state capital.
NPO Reports that former Governor of old Oyo state the late Chief Bola Ige and former Governor of Lagos state, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola were both celebrated governors who were later appointed as Ministers of Power.
The country’s power situation has not met many peoples expectations.
Imoke recalled that the ministers had once boasted that they would achieve stable power supply in six months of their appointments. He noted that they, like many other before and after them, failed to fulfil the promises.
Speaking on the theme: Nigeria: Tackling Insecurity, Power Deficit, and Transitioning into Digital Economy, Imoke dwelt on a wide of issues bedevilling Nigeria.
He spoke on the insecurity in the country regretting that despite being tacked by successive administrations insecurity had slowed national growth, affected productivity.
He said “kidnapping has become our national reality” as a country adding that Boko Haram, MEND and other forms of non-state actors have given the country lots of challenges.
The former governor said Nigeria cannot continue to shy away from true community policing adding that this is the only way to guarantee community peace.;
