The Senate Deputy Majority leader, Lola Ashiru, has raised alarm over the increase in rate of drug consumption by Nigerian youths.
The lawmaker, representing Kwara South Senatorial District, claimed that over 70 percent of Nigerian youths are into drugs.
He made this claim in a video culled from the Senate’s recent sitting and shared on X on Tuesday.
Ashiru expressed his concern over the development as he recalled a recent visit to his constituency where he observed the trend.
“I visited my constituency and the most worrisome thing was the devastating effect, not only of drug trafficking, but in consumption of this drugs.
“Without being economical with the truth, more than 70 percent of our youthful population are into drug consumption.” Ashiru said.
The lawmaker further called the attention of the Senate leader to the rise of drug trafficking amongst Nigerian youths.
He expressed that the situation has gone beyond the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) which he accused of comprise.
“Mr. President, there are so many things we should understand and put into consideration when it comes to issue of drug and narcotics.
“Drug issue has become a very big economy among our youthful population. It has become a very serious problem to the extent that I have a terrible fear for our tomorrow as a nation.
“…from my little discussion in my constituency, I discovered that the issue goes beyond NDLEA.
“NDLEA have become so compromised, so ineffective to the extent that leaving drug enforcement or drug education to the NDLEA, we will never get to where we are going.” Ashiru added.
