National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman, Buba Marwa, has call for prompt conviction and severe sentencing of drug traffickers to deter foreigners from bringing illicit substances into Nigeria.
Marwa’s made the call in a statement issued by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, following the judgment on Canadian national Adrienne Munju was sentenced to 11 years in prison for importing 35.20 kilograms of synthetic cannabis, known as ‘Canadian Loud’, into Nigeria.
NPO reports that Munju, 41, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos on Oct. 3, 2024, during inward clearance of passengers on a KLM flight.
She claimed she was recruited online to traffic the drugs for 10,000 Canadian dollars to fund her master’s degree programme in Canada.
While commending the agency’s officers and the judiciary for their swift action in the case, Marwa said the prompt and stiff penalty will send a strong warning to foreigners and others who may be contemplating bringing illicit drugs into Nigeria.
