In her efforts to encourage Girl-Child-Education in Kebbi, governor’s wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasir-Idris, on Tuesday donated books, sanity pads and a token to some selected Girls’ Schools in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gesture is in continuation of Mrs Nasir-Idris’ initiative to encourage girls to remain in school.
The governor’s wife, who is also the founder of NASARA Foundation, said the gesture was meant not only to give the girls a sense of belonging but also to boost their morale to pursue education.
Mrs Nasir-Idris, represented by her daughter, Dr Balkisu Nasir-Idris, said: “The donation is under NASARA foundation with emphasis on girl-child and vulnerable members of the society who need support to become what they want to be in life.”
She, however, observed that the women folk were being held back by some challenges associated with societal norms, values and tradition.
“The donations of books, sanitary pads and cash will help to felicitate education drive of the girl-child in school.
“I want you girls to know that all of you can reach your potential in life, that’s why we come here to give you little aid to help and boost your morale.
“Many girls are denied access to education due to early marriage and lack of support to pursue their goals from the basic, but this foundation is always ready to support the girl-child achieve their educational goals and objectives,” she assured.
Earlier in her welcome address, the State Commissioner for Basic Education, Dr. Halima Muhammad-Bande, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abubakar Magaji-Nayalwa thanked the wife of the governor for the gesture.
She appreciated the governor’s wife, especially for her untiring efforts towards girl-child support on education.
The commissioner observed that the donation would go a long way in boosting the students’ morale, and pray to God Almighty to continue to give the governor’s wife the wisdom to sustain the good spirit.
In her remarks, the Principal, Salamatu Hussaini Girls Day Secondary School, Hajiya A’isha Adamu described the governor’s wife as a mother to the orphans, the poor and the less-privileged in the state.
The principal thanked the governor’s wife for finding her school worthy of the programme.
Shortly after the Salamatu Hussaini programme, the team moved to Unity Girls’ College, Birnin Kebbi, where packs of books, sanitary pads and cash was donated to students of the school.
Earlier, the Principal, Unity College, Birnin Kebbi, Hajiya Murjanatu Attahiru, who was visibly excited thanked the governor’s wife for the gestures, describing it as apt and unprecedented in the history of the school. NAN
