Abducted doctor, Ganyiat Popoola, has finally regained her freedom after 10 months in kidnappers’ den.
This was confirmed on Wednesday by the President of the National Association of Resident Doctors, Tope Osundara.
Osundara announced the release of the doctor alongside her nephew in a telephone interview with Daily Trust.
“Yes, it is true. It happened today (Wednesday). For now, we have insulated her from the public, allowing only limited access to her,” Osundara stated.
The NARD president also disclosed that no ransom was paid to secure her release.
Popoola was abducted on December 27, 2023 alongside her husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.
Her prolonged abducted led to series of protest by the medical associations as well an online campaign with the hashtag #BringBackDrGaniyat in an effort to effect her release.
Recall NPO Reports the peaceful protest by members of the Association of Resident Doctors at the National Hospital, Abuja in August 2024.
They demanded Popoola’s rescue with placards conveying various messages, such as “Free Dr Ganiyat Popoola, help bring Ganiyat home safely,” “Rescue Dr Ganiyat now,” “Please, help bring Dr Ganiyat home,” “Injury to one is an injury to all,” and “Doctors are crying, help us save her.”
