The Acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an immediate investigation into an alleged brutality by certain officer and soldiers of the Nigerian Army on a couple.
This was contained in a statement by the Director, Army Public Relations, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Tuesday in Abuja.
Reacting to a viral audio-visual recording circulating on X showing the army officers assaulting a driver and a woman in Abuja, the Nigerian Army held the circumstances leading to this incident are not clear at the moment.
NPO reported the disturbing video on X which showed a senior army officer, identified as General C.G Musa, and two other soldiers in an altercation with the couple identified as Vershima Mker and Jennifer Lorvihi within the Abuja metropolis.
The military men had stormed Vershima’s car for allegedly bashing the General’s car.
Despite pleading, the two soldiers, caught in the video recorded by the lady, physically assaulted the driver, hitting him with a steel object before dragging him to the General for further assault.
They would later be detained at Gwarimpa Police station under the order of the General who came for their release eight hours after.
The couple reportedly suffered various degrees of injury in the course of the assault.
While order investigation into the case, affirmed its commitment to serving and protecting law abiding Nigerian citizens.
“However, the Acting Chief of Army Staff has ordered an immediate investigation to unravel the true circumstances surrounding this altercation.
“The Nigerian army remains committed to serving and protecting all law-abiding Nigerians as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Therefore, we urge the public to be rest assured that due diligence will be applied to reach a logical conclusion on this matter,” the statement read.
