Bill Gates has warned that the global coronavirus nightmare may not be over.
The Microsoft founder, one of the most prominent voices during the pandemic, insisted that COVID-19 may still have a big impact on our lives.
“There is a risk of well over five percent of a variant being generated that would be even more transmissible than the previous one and even more lethal,” Gates said to the Financial Times.
Despite his words, he noted, not to be too pessimistic in his predictions.
In any case, Gates urged caution and insisted that governments around the world rely on computer science and epidemiologists. This line of action would serve to predict the possible pandemics that could affect humanity in the future.
A necessary investment
“The amount of money invested [in healthcare systems] is very small compared to the return,” Gates said.
“The current funding of the World Health Organisation does not take the pandemic seriously.”
The billionaire said he was “disappointed” by the UK’s decision to cut its international development aid from 0.7 percent to 0.5 percent of gross national income.
“We are at rock bottom and if the UK cuts more, others will cut more,” Gates said. “This is tragic because all that money saves lives. One life saved costs less than 1,000 dollars.”
