Super Eagles have apologized to Nigerians over their horrific performance which saw them succumb to a shocking 2-1 home defeat to Rwanda at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) final qualifiers match.
Having already sealed a spot for the bi-annual tournament set to hold in Morocco, Nigerians expected the Super Eagles to put an icing in the cake by defeating Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Akwa-Ibom, yesterday.
To the dismay of their football loving supporters, the Super Eagles ended their qualifiers campaign with a humiliating defeat to Rwanda.
However, the national team has, on Tuesday, tendered apology to Nigerians in a post of their official X handle.
The Super Eagles, in the post written in pidgin, admitted to their poor performance against Rwanda.
They, however, pledged to improve and pick up from where they left at the 2023 AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast.
“Our pipu we no say Una dey vex, we understand. Make Una no look us less less, we no go fall Una hand.
“We go work hard to continue where we for stop for the last Afcon. Abeg make Una no taya to support us o. We thank Una, Una too much. When I say, Super, You say Eagles.” The Nigerian National team wrote.
Super Eagles had hosted Rwanda on Monday for the Group D final qualifying match.
Having already qualified with earlier draw against Benin Republic, Nigeria put on a lackluster first performance against Rwanda which saw both team tied at break.
However, Samuel Chukwueze’s 59th minute solo goal put the Super Eagles on the lead.
With less than 20 minutes left before full time, Rwanda charged towards the home team.
In desperate search for a win, they pulled a leveller with well taken 72nd free-kick from Mutsinzi.
Barely three minutes after the leveller, the Amavubi shocked Nigeria with another goal from Nshuti.
The visitors held onto their lead as the game ended 2-1.
Unfortunately, Rwanda failed to qualify as Benin Republic pipped them to the second spot on goal difference following earlier 0-0 draw against Libya.
