Renowned activists and #Bringbackourgirls convener, Aisha Yesufu, has taken a swipe at British High Commissioner in Nigeria, Catriona Laing, over her description of Nigeria’s election as ‘fascinating’.
Yesufu took to her Instagram handle, earlier today, labelling the High Commissioner as “two-faced standard” following her commendation of the Presidential election held last month as well as her remark about the recently concluded gubernatorial election.
As seen in the Instagram video, the activist openly condemned Catriona’s remark, stressing that the election was marred with violence and loss of lives.
“You come to our country and you sit down, fascinated by the election that is marred with violence because of course, it’s a horror film you can watch live happening.
“This double standard. This two-faced standard we do not want it. You sit on your country. You have election where people are free to go out and vote with nobody afraid of their lives.
“But you come to our own place and accept the minimum standard. You are okay with ‘Oh! A few have been killed’. Because those few are not part of your family or your citizens.” Yesufu said.
She further condemned the outgoing High Commissioner for supporting corrupt Nigerian politicians who invest in the UK with embezzled funds from the West African nation’s treasury.
“We have said to you, stop giving enabling environment to people who loot our nation dry and take them to your places and invest them there.” She added.
Prior to last week’s states election, Catriona Laing had commend the electoral activities experienced during last month’s general election.
She commended the outcome of the election and the conduct of Nigerians during the election while stressing that the 2023 election was an improvement on 2019 general election.
“Though there were some disappointments in the last election, overall, every Nigerian should be proud because since 1999 Nigeria has been on the right track as far as participatory democracy is concerned.
“The election here is very different and fascinating as you are moving to a three-party system or maybe even four. I think Nigerians as well should realise that their votes count”, she had said.
