All eyes are on Kano, North-West geo-political zone of Nigeria today as the Supreme Court rules on the governorship contest between the All Progressive Congress and the New Nigerian Peoples Party’s candidates.
Governor Kabir Yussuf, the sitting Governor, had approached the apex court to appeal against the judgement of the Appeal Court which ruled that the APC contender and former Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Nasir Gawuna, was the winner of the election.
Already, the tension in the state is palpable with security agencies in a flurry of activities to curtail possible fallout of the ruling of the court today.
NPO Reports that a security meeting held by the agencies in the state on Thursday indicated that no protests or jubilation would be allowed after the ruling of the court.
Commissioner of Police, Hussain Gumel, while warning against all forms of gathering, said the police in conjunction with sister security agencies such as the Army, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and other local security groups have been mobilised towards ensuring that no breach of the peace is allowed.
Gumel stated that the command has implemented security measures to allow residents to carry on with their legitimate businesses without threats to lives and property.
He said, “We have mobilised sufficient armed personnel to provide security at all flashpoints, including political party offices, the State Government House, INEC HQ, banks and commercial areas, mosques, churches, recreation centres and motor parks before, during and after the judgement.
“I am giving 100 per cent assurance to all law-abiding residents of the state to go about freely with their daily activities without threat to lives and property,” the commissioner said.
