Former Managing Director of the Nigerian Import Export Bank (NEXIM), Robert Orya, has bagged a total of 490 years’ imprisonment after being convicted of N2.4 billion fraud.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Thursday by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Orya, who was arraigned before the Federal High Court, Abuja, by the EFCC, was convicted by the presiding judge, Justice F.E Messiri.
The judge found him guilty of all 49 counts of the charge filed against him.
According to the EFCC, the ex-NEXIM boss who served in the position from 2011 to 2016, was sentenced to ten years imprisonment on each on the 49 counts.
The statement read; “The EFCC, today, February 5, 2026, secured the conviction of Robert Orya, a former Managing Director, Nigerian Import Export Bank, NEXIM (2011-2016), for a fraud of about N2.4 Billion.
“Orya who was prosecuted by EFCC’s Samuel Ugwuegbulam, was convicted by Justice F.E. Messiri of the FCT High court, Abuja and sentenced to ten years imprisonment on each of the 49 count charge.”
According to reports, Orya was first arraigned before the court on November 25, 2021, on charges including criminal breach of trust, impersonation, misappropriation of public funds, official corruption, fraud and abuse of office.
He was accused of abusing his position as managing director to unlawfully obtain more than N1.368 billion from NEXIM Bank, alongside other fraudulent transactions that formed the basis of the 49 counts.
