Human rights advocacy group, Amnesty International Nigeria, has condemned the remand of an African Democratic Congress chieftain in Delta State, Daniel Perela.
Perela was reportedly remanded in Kuje correctional centre following his arrest and arraignment over alleged cyberstalking of one Chief Ekomieyefa Uduboh.
Reacting in a statement issued on its X handle on Sunday, Amnesty condemned the quick arraignment and remand of the ADC chieftain.
The group alleged weaponisation of the judicial system and abuse of the Cybercrimes Act.
It noted that targeting people by weaponising the judicial system undermines human rights as it called for the withdrawal of all the charges against Perela.
The statement read; ‘Amnesty strongly condemns the targeted persecution of Comrade Daniel Ezekiel Perela who has been hurriedly remanded in Kuje Prison for his peaceful political activities — and drawing attention to allegations of widespread atrocities by some individuals in Oporoza community, Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South West, Delta State.
‘Right now Daniel Ezekiel is at Kuje Prison over bogus charges that include “cyberstalking against one Chief Ekomieyefa Uduboh.”
‘Targeting people through weaponization of the judicial system undermines human rights. The bogus charges against Comrade Daniel Ezekiel Perela must be dropped.
‘The increasing use of the Cybercrimes Act to suppress freedom of expression must end now. In a free society, no one should be punished for criticism.’
