In another huge setback, Labour Party has again lost hold of a member of the House Representatives who, on Thursday, announced his defections from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
This is coming barely a week after five LP lawmakers abandoned the party for the APC.
Following the footstep of his comrades, Hon. Ajang Iliya, representing Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency of Plateau State, officially joined the ruling party as he denounced his membership with the Labour Party.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, made the announcement during plenary, reading Hon. Iliya’s letter of defection.
Iliya, in his letter, cited the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party as a key factor behind his decision.
According to report, the lawmaker also stressed his growing misalignment with the Labour Party’s stance on critical national issues, describing the situation as untenable.
“The challenges within the Labour Party have made it increasingly difficult for me to function effectively as a representative of my constituency.” he noted.
Prior to Iliya’s defection, his colleague, Hon. Daylop Chollom, announced his defection from the party yesterday.
Similarly, the lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency cited the political crisis in LP and the need for a better representation of his people as reasons for his move.
NPO earlier reported the resignation of Labour Party’s 2023 Bayelsa state governorship candidate Udengs Eradiri, and his running mate, Benjamin Nathus, from the party.
