There was panic on the long bridge, Warewa area of the Lagos-Ibadan Highway in the early hours of Wednesday as armed men laid siege on the road robbing travellers of their belongings.
The incident happened hours after the Ogun Police Command denied knowledge of reported attacks by suspected gunmen at the Kara area in the early hours of Tuesday.
The incident at about 5am on Wednesday was said to have led to injuring one passenger who is said to be getting medical attention at a facility nearby.
Eye witnesses say the gunmen had taken over the long bridge shooting sporadically forcing many motorists to abandon their vehicles.
A video posted by a social media user showed vehicles hurriedly turning back to avert being caught in the cross fire.
NPO Reports learnt that in the process, many vehicles hit one another.
The Ogun police command had denied attacks in the area.
A social media user, Gbenga Obaleye, had claimed that he said some gunmen attack members of the RCCG who were returning from a programme that ran overnight at the RCCG.
Contacted for confirmation, the Police told the NPO Reports that Obaleye’s claims were false saying there was no attack of whatever form in the area.
He however said that the Commissioner of Police had directed that 24 hours of surveillance should be put in place especially to disallow criminals from taking advantage of the road construction taking place in the area.
