Following the Appeal Court Judgement ordering INEC to recognize Machina, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formerly notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to comply with the Court Judgement and recognise Bashir Machina as the party’s candidate for Yobe north senatorial district.
In a letter cited by NPO Correspondent dated Oct. 12,2022 and signed by the Chairman and the National Secretary of the party,Sen. Adamu Abdullah and Iyiola Omisore asking INEC to recognize Machina as the bonafide candidate for the district.
“We write to notify the Commission of the attached judgment dated 28th September 2022 and Order dated 5th October 2022 from the Federal High Court, Damaturu Judicial Division, directing the Commission to accept and recognize Bashir Sheriff as the Party’s candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District, Yobe State and to publish same accordingly,” the letter reads.
“Above is for your information and necessary action, please.”
INEC had earlier released a list of candidates for the 2023 elections, but there was no candidate for APC in the senatorial district.
In September, a federal high court in Damaturu, the Yobe capital, had ordered the APC and INEC to recognise Machina as the senatorial candidate for Yobe north.
The court verdict followed the controversy over the APC Yobe north senatorial ticket involving Machina and Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
Following the court judgment, the senate president had said he accepted the verdict of the court and would not appeal it.
“The said judgement disqualifies my candidature and therefore my participation in the elections,” Lawan had said.
“After due consultations with my political associates, supporters and well-wishers, I have decided not to appeal against the judgement. I accept the judgement.”
Lawan had last week also reaffirmed his earlier statement saying that “he would not Appeal the Judgement”.
He added that he’s ready to work with all the concerned stakeholders in the next year’s general elections
