Israel’s communications minister has accused four freelance Gaza-based journalists who have worked with Western outlets of knowing that Hamas was going to attack Israel. Shlomo Karhi told Reuters, AP, CNN and the New York Times that “individuals within your organization… had prior knowledge of these horrific actions”. According to the police, the new move was with the approval of the Police Service Commission. The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, ordered the posting and redeployment of 40 senior police officers comprising 14 Assistant Inspectors General of Police and 26 Commissioners of Police to various commands and formations in the country. At a ceremony to mark the beginning of the 2023/2024 Legal Year in the state, Amadi said that most of the cases had been in court since the preceding Legal Year. He said High Courts in the state carried over 11,074 cases from the 2022/2023 Legal Year when it disposed of 5,041. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has deployed its operatives to monitor the Saturday governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi. The Spokesperson of the Commission, Mrs Azuka Ogugua, said this in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. According to her, the commission’s operatives have been deployed to the 56 local government areas and 649 Wards in the three states where the election would be held. The authorities in Ghana have launched a manhunt for the people who cut down a famous 300-year-old kola tree, which was believed to have healing powers. The tree dates back to the Ashanti Kingdom, part of modern-day Ghana. Local people says the tree grew in the spot where renowned priest Komfo Anokye spat a kola nut on the ground in the early 1700s. Many local people believed the black and white seeds of the kola tree could cure ailments and curses. Colombian-born Liverpool footballer Luis Díaz’s father has been released by the left-wing guerrillas who kidnapped him 13 days ago, police sources and local media say. Luis Manuel Díaz was handed over to United Nations and Catholic church officials by members of the National Liberation Army (ELN). He was abducted on 28 October in the family’s hometown, Barrancas. The footballer’s mother was also seized, but was freed within hours. Local media said Mr Díaz had travelled by military helicopter to the city of Valledupar, where he would undergo a medical examination before being returned to his family.
