The nation’s correctional centres have 3,413 inmates on death row, according to Mr Abubakar Umar, spokesman of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS). Umar told newsmen on Friday in Abuja that the total number of inmates in centres across the country is 77,849 comprising 76,081 males and 1,768 females “as at Monday, December 18, 2023”. The Police Command in Enugu State said it arrested a man for possessing and transacting in counterfeit naira notes within Enugu Metropolis. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised alarm on the increase in dengue infections recorded in 2023 globally, which represents a potentially high public health threat. The UN health agency gave the warning on Friday as it reported more than five million dengue infections and 5,000 deaths from the disease worldwide in 2023. As rescue efforts continue at the site of a collapsed three-storey building in Lagos on Friday, the state government has ordered that owners of distress building must vacate them immediately. The Yobe government on Friday said the recent power outages experienced in the state were as a result of destruction of 330KVA power tower by suspected Boko Haram insurgents. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (retired), Special Adviser to Gov. Mai Mala Buni, stated this to journalists in Damaturu. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) on Friday said that one of its towers T372 around Katsaita Village in Yobe was vandalised on Thursday. The company said the vandals brought down the 330 Kilo Volt (KV) transmission tower which pulled down another tower T373 along the same transmission line route.
