A former Philadelphia police officer has been charged with murder for fatally shooting a 12-year-old boy in the back during a chaotic foot chase in early March. Authorities say that Edsaul Mendoza, 26, engaged in a “tactically unsound” pursuit of Thomas “TJ” Siderio and shot him despite knowing he was unarmed. Police believed a friend of his was involved in the theft of a weapon. Mr Mendoza was arrested on Sunday. The UK’s Ministry of Defence has released its daily intelligence update on the war in Ukraine. The MoD says Russia’s military is now “significantly weaker” as a result of the invading Ukraine. It says the recovery of Russia’s military will be made more difficult by sanctions imposed on Moscow, and in the long term this will impede the country’s ability to deploy a conventional military force. The US Supreme Court could be about to overturn the nationwide legal right to abortion, according to an unprecedented leaked draft of a court document. In a 98-page draft opinion, Justice Samuel Alito writes that the 1973 Roe v Wade decision legalising abortion across the US is “egregiously wrong”. If the top US court strikes down the ruling, “trigger laws” could instantly make abortion illegal in 22 US states. The justices are not expected to issue a ruling until early July.
