Bill to Increase Lagos State Local Government Areas (LGAs) from 20 to 57 has scaled through the second reading at the House of Representatives.
The bill, which was passed at the Green Chamber’s plenary session on Wednesday, will see Lagos State’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) officially recognized as full-fledged Local Government Areas (LGAs).
It was sponsored by Hon. James Abiodun Faleke (Ikeja Federal Constituency), Hon. Babajimi Benson (Ikorodu Federal Constituency), and Hon. Enitan Dolapo Badru (Lagos Island I Federal Constituency), alongside 19 other lawmakers.
According to report, the proposed legislation marks a significant step in addressing Lagos’ administrative and infrastructural needs.
It will see the total number of LGAs in Nigeria increase from 774 to 811 with Lagos overtaking Kano’s 44 LGAs as the state with the highest number of local councils.
The bill now awaits further legislative processes before final implementation.
