A major construction project the Kandadji Dam has been suspended as effect of sanctions imposed on Niger bite harder.
A statement obtained by the NPO Reports on Thursday said the workers at the construction site are sacked and no compensation would be given.
The construction company attributed the development to the sanctions being imposed on Niger as a result of the military coup which upstaged President Mohamed Bazoum.
A statement by the Director of the company titled “Niger Suspend Kandadji Dam projects” the statement gave Notice on the suspension of the Kandadji Dam Project and the dismissal of workers.
“As a result of the political turbulence that occurred on July 26, 2023 in Niger, the security situation is becoming increasingly worrisome.
“The Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO), the European Union and the World Bank have all imposed financial sanctions on the country, making it impossible to settle accounts for the company.”
The statement explained further that in the face of force majeure, “we find ourselves forced to stop all construction activities for a week and proceed to phased termination of local workers’ contracts.”
The statement added that it should be emphasized that the termination of the contract due to force majeure would not involve the compensation of fired employees.
