Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has alongside 23 members of the State House of Assembly resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Diri’s declared his resignation alongside the members of the state assembly during a meeting at the government house in Yenagoa, the state’s capital, on Wednesday.
The development is coming barely a day after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, officially dumped the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In his address captured in a video shared on X, Diri said his resignation from the PDP was borne out of obvious reasons which were not disclosed in the clip.
He expressed his gratitude to his supporters while reaffirming his pledge to build a stronger Bayelsa state.
“I’m not going to resign alone. As you can see, I’m here with Mr. Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and all the members of our party who are going to go with me.
“There are some who are not here because they are on official assignment.
“Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party for very obvious reasons.
“I’m grateful to all my friends and supporters who have stood by us and with us. I want to thank all of you again and again. Together, we will continue to build a strong Bayelsa state and strong country by exentsion.” Diri said.
The governor is expected to disclose his new party soon.
Meanwhile, Diri and the lawmakers’ resignation have compounded the woes of the PDP who are now left with eight governors.
