The head of US insurance company United Healthcare was shot and killed in New York City, according to the BBC’s US partner CBS News.
Brian Thompson was fatally shot in the chest just before 07:00 EST (12:00 GMT) on Wednesday outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan.
A suspect fled the scene and remains at large, the New York Police Department said.
Thompson, head of the largest private insurer in the United States, appeared to be targeted in the attack, according to investigators
He was scheduled to speak at an investor conference later in the day, which has since been cancelled.
New York governor calls shooting ‘horrific’ and ‘targeted’
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson “horrific” and “targeted” in a statement just moments ago.
She said that she had “directed the State Police to provide NYPD with any necessary assistance with the investigation to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers”.
“Our hearts are with the family and loved ones of Mr. Thompson and we are committed to ensuring the perpetrator is brought to justice,” the governor added.
