The Senate has approved the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan as the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The red chamber approved Amupitan’s appointment following the conclusion of his screening on Thursday.
NPO earlier Reported that the university don had appeared before the Senate today days after his appointment by President Bola Tinubu.
Standing before the lawmakers during their plenary session, the new INEC Chairman fielded several questions ranging from the speculations on his alleged role in Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential campaign to the controversies that surrounded the collation of the election results which was done manually as against the announced plan to use the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) for the collation.
On his alleged inclusion in the list of Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential legal team, Amupitan affirmed that he was never part of the team, disclosing that he came along with a certified true copy of all the counsels involved.
The INEC Chairman thereafter vowed to audit the IReV over its infamous glitch during the 2023 election.
Having been considered to have attended to all questions asked by the lawmakers, Senate proceeded to a voice vote for the approval of the INEC Chairman’s appointment.
The session anchored by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, saw majority of the lawmakers consenting to the approval of Amupitan’s appointment which was thereafter declared by Akpabio.
