The Senate has confirmed the ambassadorial appointment of the immediate past Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
NPO Reported that Yakubu’s name was, alongside over 60 other ambassadorial designate nominated by President Bola Tinubu, submitted to the Senate for confirmation and approval.
Despite controversies which had the former INEC Chairman’s appearance on the list, the red chamber would on Thursday approve his nomination.
The Senate approved his nomination during its plenary session.
The controversies which surrounded Mahmood’s nomination was borne out of his conduct of the 2023 Presidential election which several Nigerians faulted.
Mahmood was accused of rigging the election in favour of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) which had President Bola Tinubu as its candidate.
The major talking point of the election was the INEC Chairman’s manual collation of the election result despite the presence of the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) where all the polling units election were collated.
