Sequel to report of Super Eagles’ alleged maltreatment at Libya, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened up over the disturbing incident as they vowed to begin probe and take necessary actions.
The African football governing body broke silence over the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
While condemning Libya for keeping the Nigerian National team stranded for hours at the airport they were directed to land, CAF disclosed reaching out to the Libyan and Nigerian authorities.
It, however, announced that case has been transferred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action.
“CAF views the disturbing and unacceptable experiences of the Nigerian National Football Team (“Super Eagles”) at an airport in Libya in a very serious light
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (“Super Eagles”) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.“ CAF wrote.
Recall that the Super Eagles had arrived at Libya yesterday ahead of their return leg match at the ongoing African Cup of Nations Qualifiers.
They were scheduled to land at Benghazi airport, but the Libyan authorities diverted their flight to a deserted airport.
The team’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, narrated the disturbing ordeal of the team and technical crew who were left stranded at the airport.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are on their way back to Nigeria as they finally departed from the Libyan airport few hours ago.
