Dismisses Allegations against Staff

The Lagos University Teaching Hospital’s (LUTH) Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adeyemo Wasiu, has dismissed allegation filed against the hospital and its staff by relatives of a deceased 26-year-old man.
NPO Reported earlier reported that relatives of the deceased had on Tuesday stormed the hospital, accusing the staff of demanding N1.9 million before the release of the deceased’s body.
A lady who claimed to be a sister of the deceased had in a TikTok video claimed that the hospital demanded over N7 million in the course of the man’s 15 days stay at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) which was fully paid alongside his medication bills and bed space charges.
She further accused LUTH of being responsible for her brother’s death as she claimed she was talking before being brought to hospital where he became unresponsive all through his 15 days stay before his death.
She also alleged that the hospital staff stole the provisions sent to her brother.
Reacting to the development in a telephone conversation with NPO Reports Correspondent on Wednesday, Adeyemo dismissed the allegations while disclosing that the protesting crowd captured in the video were rented by a sibling of the deceased who was unaware of the debt owed by the family.
He further disclosed that the hospital management reached out to the family who disowned the agitators as they agreed to pay the outstanding balance.
“These are people that were rented from Mushin. There is nothing about it. They owed money and didn’t want to pay. But we have resolved it. They are going to pay their money.
“We spoke with his (the deceased) family. His family denied all of them.
“It is just one brother or sister of the deceased that didn’t know what was going on and they were making trouble.
“We discussed with the family and the family denied them.
“We have to go and tell the family that they need to go and talk to them, and they dispersed them. It is a pure lie.
“They owed money. Rather than asking for the details, they didn’t. Later they asked for the details. We explained to them, and we resolved it.
“But you know this age of social media. Everybody believes that they can blackmail us into not collecting the money.
“They don’t pay into my account. They pay into treasury. Nobody can go without paying, even if it is one kobo of government money.
“The family has agreed to pay. We have met with them.
“Even before we discussed with them, we have to tell them that we will not discuss anything unless they asked them to disperse. And they had to do that.” the CMD said.
Adeyemo also debunked claims that the staff of the hospital stole the deceased’s provisions while being admitted.
“There is nothing like that. There are some things that the Press should not believe. Who is going to take it? Is it the CMD?” He asked.
