Developer Had Approval for 15 Storey Building But Went to 21 Before Building Collapse - Source

There are indications that the developer of the 21 storey building which collapsed on Gerald Road, Ikoyi Monday afternoon may have flouted approval limit.

A source said while the building collapsed at 21 storey, the approval that was given was for a 15 storey building.

This was just as emergency responders mobilized to scene according to Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu, Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

“All first responders are en route to secure the scene while the heavy duty equipment and life detection equipment have been dispatched,” he said.

At least 50 people are reportedly trapped under the rubble after a 21-storey building collapsed in Ikoyi, Lagos State.

The building, located at 20, Gerrard Road, collapsed around 3 p.m. on Monday.

However, the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development says its rescue team were struggling to clear gridlock to access the collapsed building site few metres away.

“LASG rescue operation underway. Team struggling to clear gridlock at 200 metres from collapse site,” Mukaila Sanusi, Spokesman of the ministry told NAN on Monday Afternoon.
